The food is delicious and service is great! I would highly recommend the crab dip appetizer and sitting out back!

This place should be called the "Original Waterfront Hushpuppies Shack". Their Hushpuppies are really good! Everything else was just okay. The service was fine and the place looks nice inside but its probably not worth the prices. The tables by the open windows are very very nice on a cool evening. The main reason for 3 stars is that the fish does not taste fresh. I ate the blackened Redfin which tasted fine because it had been completely drowned in sauce. While the sauce was good, the fish still tasted like standard store frozen fish. Nothing special. I will probably go back and give it another try because the tables by the windows are nice, beer is fairly cheap and the service was good. I would say, give it a try but don't expect anything amazing...other than the Hushpuppies. Those things were LEGIT!

I tried to like it. I am here for holiday and all I want is good seafood. I ordered the seafood gumbo and it was mushy. The fish was fried beyond recognition. I am sorry but I could find better seafood in the mountains.

Wow! I'm glad I didn't check the reviews before my friend and I ate here yesterday. I really liked this place and will most certainly go again. A friend and I stopped here, a Saturday afternoon during July. Summer time, and usually, for a tourist town, I would expect a line. It was busy but not overly. We got right in, no wait, and sat outside on the deck. Good choice. I was afraid it would be too hot out there but there was a nice breeze. Its always a plus to be able to enjoy a good meal while being able to be close enough to enjoy the sights and sounds of the water. We were seated by a greeter then very soon after a waitress came by to get drink orders and bring menus. I went for Baja shrimp tacos and my friend order an oyster PO boy. She said hers was great and enjoyed it. No complaints and lots of raves about how good the oysters were . I'm not a fan of fried oysters so I can't elaborate on it. Mine was absolutely wonderful! Soft shell "taco" with lettuce, cheese, and fried buffalo type shrimp. It came with sour cream on the side and a side of beans and rice. The tacos (2) had a hint of cilantro in them. Very very good. We ordered soft drinks with our meal and when they got low the waitress quickly came and re filled them. I was stuffed when we finished but a saw someone with a Piña Colada that looked so good we each ordered one. They were perfect. And a bit of whipped cream on top. We both agreed that we will return again. Our total meal with drinks was $40. Good great as was the service.

Went for lunch and was not impressed. Had the bangin shrimp and crab dip for appetizers and there wasn't much bang in the shrimp and the dip reeked of mayonnaise. The fried pita dough for the dip was very good though. I had the fried grouper plate and the grouper was okay at best. Meat was dark and not very flaky. Overall the meal and service were just average. With so many seafood places I the area I would try elsewhere.

Pricey for eating on dirty picnic tables. Food is OK but nothing to write about. Not a place I will be running back to

With the new Chef Cory this is a place to try- the food is amazing and this long time restaurant is again a contender in the area. The new menu & chef makes this a must try for tourists and locals!

Awesome drinks, especially the Bloody Marys! We had the Smoked Tuna Dip, Shrimp Tacos, and Calamari. Everything was excellent and the service was great. We enjoyed the awesome view of the water while we ate and drank with friends. Highly recommend.

Mostly Locals. Good food and an excellent view of the water. Comfortable atmosphere. Great place to eat, drink and be merry.

Got calamari and fried green tomatoes for appetizers for the table. Tomatoes were great, calamari was a bit rubbery, but had good flavor. I got dungeness crab for my meal and it was good (a little overpriced, but good). Someone at the table got red fish which they enjoyed, but someone else got "grouper" which was apparently not grouper. Great location and view though. Service was OK and apparently they had a new chef who came out to check on our appetizers which was nice.

Good food and reasonably priced. Perfect views of the sound and excellent service. Too many oysters and not enough crab in the steamed bucket. I would definitely go back.

I'm very surprised about the bad reviews. Was nervous eating here because of them, but had a Restaurant.com gift certificate so decided to give it a try. I personally got the crab cake lunch plate and everything on the plate was delicious. Fries were well-seasoned and the remoulade sauce was really good. My mom got the tilapia and said it was the best fish she's had for a long time. Don't let the exterior fool you - give this place a try.

We stopped for lunch. The gumbo was pretty good. Mrs Eva and I each ordered a crab cake sandwich. They were not good. The cake had a good amount of crab in it, but was mushy like a dip rather than a crab cake. It was as though it was not cooked long enough to give it some firmness. The rest of the experience was very mediocre. I would not go out of my way to eat here.

Warning do not order steak at a seafood place this place is no exception. Wife ordered the steak it was so TOUGH she barely ate any of it. Should have known better you just don't order steak at a seafood place. Manager took off $3....thanks partly our fault we should know better. After eating at the Fisherman's Wharf on the board walk the night before this place was right on target for seafood. After getting less than fresh oysters at the Wharf the Crab Shack offered up delicious fresh steamed oysters...nice, tasty, perfect,..and priced RIGHT..fried shrimp and oysters were just as good, plentiful and fairly priced. Place is right on the water you want to pay for environment go to the Wharf this place does seafood right...disclaimer..order the steak you are on your own.

The hush puppies are great and... the view is nice? Unfortunately, I've been dragged here a couple times, only because our usual seafood place down 98 is closed Sundays. Also, my wife really loves their hush puppies (and I suspect she has a sadistic streak) The menu just lists generic "fish". Ostensibly, they have a "fresh" catch so it changes daily. The first time we ate here the waitress told us that due to the weather the "boats hadn't been out" and the fish was a "really good, firm, white fish called 'pangasius'" And the alarm bells went off immediately. See, I know my seafood, and 'pangasius' is a fancy marketing term for basa, which is a freshwater fish imported from southeast Asia that is a cheaper less good alternative to tilapia, which is a cheaper less good alternative to catfish, which is a cheaper less good alternative to, you know, seafood. Every other visit the waitress dropped the weather excuse and just tried to sell us on the "really good, firm, white fish called 'pangasius.'" Trust me it's not good or firm. It is white and when fried it can give Gorton's fish sticks some competition. But, considering some of the best fish in the world is caught a few miles from here, there is no excuse for trying to sell frozen farmed freshwater fish from Cambodia. It's just offensive. Especially when they are charging you the same as if they were serving you local grouper, it should be criminal. Also, the crab they are so proud of is snow crab, the closest snow crab fishery is about 3,800 miles to the northwest. It just seems to me that a "crab shack" in Florida should serve crabs that can be caught in Florida, not Russia. Service has been really bad every time. It has never been crowded at all when we've been and still getting service is like pulling teeth.

Had a lovely evening here with friends. The sunset was gorgeous from the patio. Food was very good. We had both the grilled shrimp and the fried shrimp. It was very well prepared and seasoned. The sides were all good too. I would gladly eat here again.

Absolutely delicious despite the reviews. Exactly what we look for in a restaurant when we come to Florida. Laid back. On the water. Good seafood. Had crab dip - we were licking the bowl. My husband and I each had a po boy. He had fries oysters. Commented that it was small than normal for a po boy. He LOVED the Cole slaw - said it tastes like his grandma's. I had grilled grouper. Delish. My daughter's crab cake sandwich was yummy. My son had the crawfish and crab pasta. Was spicy but wonderful. Would eat here again if we were in town and would definitely recommend to anyone.

If you find yourself driving along the ocean and craving fish tacos, like I did, this place hits the spot perfectly. The blackened fish tacos and a cold yuengling was exactly what I needed, and I'll be back next time I'm in Florida.

Stopped in here on our first night in town. .. they might be "original" but they are no where near the best... the food was pretty good. Our waiter was awesome and fast of course the place was empty so I don't know how they are during a rush btw it was 4pm so that might explain why the rest of the review is not praise.. The price to portion size is crazy.... I had the blackened mahi mahi and fried oyster meal while it was good the mahi mahi was cardboard thin and was gone in two bites... and the oysters were mushy. . None of the food was fresh catch.. the chain places offer the same quality food for less money and bigger servings... this place has the potential to be great good taste and great location. But with the high prices small portions and to it off being frozen and not fresh. I honestly believe the only reason it is still open is the have the marina and the crab shack is a tax rightoff or pet project but not the main concern of the owner..

Horrible crab (and i'm not picky)! Service was slower than you'd want but we did have a large group. It's worth noting that another guy got crab and his was cooked perfectly and I liked it when he let me try the difference. There are much better places to eat around here, just keep driving!

I had very delicious fried oysters with grilled asparagus, slaw and hush puppies. All were very good. The service was good too.

It might just be me but if this place is called the Crab Shack, why is the dish they recommend a fish taco? I would expect at least a crab taco or something. Its like going to a Mexican restaurant and have them recommend a hamburger. Or going to a steak house and have them say our chicken is the best. Well, besides all of that. The place's service is better but the food is just mediocre. Give them a try but you won't get a foodgasm.

Wait, wait and wait a little more. 10 minutes for our waitress 15 more minutes for a draft beer. They could not find the bartender. We then asked for a glass of wine - oops - bad idea - after 5 minutes we decided to leave.

First time customer here. Seated quickly and got drinks right on time. Saw a man on the way in eating crab claws so I looked for them on the menu. No crab claws on it. Waitress comes back and I just tell her I want the claws. She says ok, half pound or a pound? I'll take a pound. She says ok. Claws came out very quickly. Good temperature but there didn't seem to be what I think a pound looks like (about 30 claws)and not a good meaty claw that I'd expect but ate them and didn't complain................UNTIL, the tab came. 1 beer, 1 drink 1# crab claws. $42.00? Wasn't told I was ordering a $30.00 dollar appetizer!!!!!!!!!!!! I understand Market Price but think this is a little much. Even if it was a premium grade crab claw I'd have to question that price. Would have been a common courtesy to let a customer know that he's ordering a small basket of gold. So we got with the manager (Stephen). He was attentive to our problem and offered to take 25% off the bill and gave me a 20% off card if I would give them another try. He Said most people that order "CRAB" understand the high price because it's "CRAB" but I could tell he thought the same thing as me. Got about 30 Claws I'd guess. $1 per claw? No Way! By the way the cocktail sauce was nothing more than glorified ketchup and the drawn butter was tasteless. Add a little something to it! Oh, didn't mention I'm a restaurant owner myself. Other food looked really good as I looked at plates on the way to my table. May be very good but think I'll go on down the road and try something new again. My rating only applies to the menu, the Crab Claw (amount and quality) and definitely the pricing.

Went for dinner last night, we sat right out on the deck over the water .... Had the king crab ... Which was amazing! and the crab dip for an appetizer was pretty delish also (eat it pretty quickly or it gets greasy). We also had the island tea and the bucket . Very strong drinks ... The enjoyable kind of strong :)

I am a local and I gave it three tries. The food is OK. I had Fish Tacos and Oysters and I would go back, but the staff, not so great. I experienced them running around the restaurant playing with each other, goofing off, while I sat there waiting on a menu. Locally owned Restaurant does not mean employees can behave badly.

Very glad we decided to give this place a try after reading some of the poor reviews. Casual atmosphere with outdoor seating on the harbor. Had the peel n eat shrimp which were ever so slightly over cooked but still tasty and nicely seasoned. Hubby had the blackened grouper and I went with the fried shrimp and crab cake dinner. Both came with slaw, hush puppies and choice of side. We got the grilled asparagus and black beans and rice. Everything was excellent. The grouper was a generous portion and perfectly blackened. The beans and rice were light and fluffy with scallions and fresh herbs, not the typical gummy mess you get at other places. Service was friendly and attentive. Nothing fancy here, just good fresh seafood and great views. Give it a try.

What a wonderful " Shack", it has all the decor , Fish Pictures on the wall, t shirts for sale and great waterfront seating ( next to Park) HOWEVER , I am conflicted the food is Much better than a typical shack. The Gumbolaya is the best this side of the Big Easy so don't get fancy silverware because it hurts the Shack Ambiance. The Crab & Mushroom Tilapia defiantly was in conflict with the typical " Shack" food. The prices were in line with the food quality and ingredients. There is a Park next door where you can run the bored kids while you enjoy the beer and drinks. Fellow Wineaux's be aware this is. Typical " Shack , they do serve Oyster Bay , so not horrible. How many Wineaux's expect a great wine list at a seafood shack anyway. No White tablecloths here. Oh the clientele represent the locals and snowbirds alike!

Yep, Yelp...you did it again. Wanted to try a new place (for us) for lunch on the waterfront in a relatively new town. Turned to Yelp...as any sensible and well-read Yelper would...and found "The Shack" or, more formally, "The Original Waterfront Crab Shack," next to the Fort Walton Beach Yacht Basin. Limited parking, but we were fortunate; we arrived just in time for a mid-afternoon lunch. Bar was about half-full, the covered patio--half that...outdoor deck--nada, nobody. Yet, I still liked the ambience. There was something about the feel of the place that said, "glad you're here; grab a seat, sit back and enjoy." I started with a glass of Pensacola Bay Seasonal ESB (Extra Special Bitter). It had a moderate hoppy flavor and a little citrus finish. Nice all-around beer to accompany a variety of dishes. Yes, I'd order it again.... Next up...Pick Two Combo with Grilled Fish and Fried Oysters, Coleslaw, Steamed Broccoli, Hush Puppies. All around good with moist flaky fish, sweet and tender nicely fried oysters and broccoli steamed just short of soft. (So it was fine.) Hush puppies were fairly run-of-the-mill standard fare with a speck or two of green (onion or japaleño...not sure since I paid little notice to this frequent add-on). Coleslaw was creamy and slightly sweet but nothing out of the ordinary. (One downfall...IHO...was that the fish, although cooked very, very well, was Tilapia. I should have asked beforehand because I am not a fan due to the farm-raised factory aspects of this cheap fish. I should have specifically asked for fresh Gulf-Coast fish...so, definitely my error.) My wife ordered Deep Fried Shrimp with Grilled Asparagus, Coleslaw & Hush Puppies. The batter-coated shrimp were fried to a beautiful golden color. But, although they were fried consistently, the breading fell off a few of the pieces. The asparagus was highly seasoned and over-grilled making it wrinkled and limp. Good flavor...not-so-nice texture. Looking forward to next time when I'm all for sampling the "Fried Green Tomatoes with a Volcano Crabmeat topping." With a little more attention to detail, I'd rank it 4 stars, but for this visit...just a 3-1/2. Pleasant, attentive, and polite serving staff....and, as I said before, great atmosphere in a nice waterside setting.

First time today price is high for a bucket of seafood . The taste is bland or i must say lack of some seasoning.

Went here on our first day of vacation. I had the snow crabs - cannot go wrong with that. My daughter and her friend shared the Crawfish and Crab Cream Pasta. They loved it and want to come back to have it again. My husband had the blackened shrimp - very good and spicy. My daughter who does not like seafood had Baja Chicken Tacos minus the flour tortillas (wish they had corn tortillas available for those with gluten intolerance). I would go back. Loved the views and atmosphere.

This place is whatever. The outside is a little run down, but that's ok. There was NO parking so I thought wow, it must be packed! Not so, there were like 5 people inside. Not sure why there were so many cars here, but you may have to park across the street at the FWB city hall. It seems FWB police uses the parking lot as a helo landing pad, so I wouldn't recommend it. The sweet iced tea is way way way too sweet. I got the tilapia and it was really good but the potatoes were absolutely meh and the coleslaw was a sugary mess. The hush puppies were really good though. I got the chocolate swirl cheesecake for desert and it tasted like flan and the crust was super thick and crumbly. Service is great and really fast but still not a fan.

Read a lot about the Original Crab Shack (don't confuse this with the Crab Trap chain) and we were excited to visit this restaurant. We had a table out on the covered deck and really enjoyed the view. I had oysters on the half shell with a cup of gumbo. The oysters were nice and salty and cold. The gumbo was really good but not with a New Orleans roux flavor. It also could have used a little more seafood. My main course was an oyster po-boy. This was excellent but unfortunately marred by overcooked oysters. We got the key lime pie to-go and later determined it was excellent. Outstanding prompt service by MiMi. We will definitely come back to the Original Crab Shack. (Visited June 2014)

I started with the Fried Green Tomatoes. I was impress with the presentation and the taste did not let me down. I would have to say that they were the best I have ever eaten! Next I had the Blackened Gulf Shrimp dinner. It was also very flavorful with a nice presentation. My only complaint would be that it was advertise as "large Gulf Shrimp." They were medium and a bit pricey for medium shrimp. Service was great and courteous!

Overall: I was a bit disappointed with this restaurant given the good reviews I've heard from the locals. The prices were a higher than expected compared to the quantity provided and the taste was bland. My order: 1/2 dozen oysters: $6.99 Bowl of Gumbo: $7.99 Despite the fact the Oysters were out of season, I decided to order this based on the restaurant's claim of "fresh seasonal oysters." My experience here further supports what I've learned about how to determine if shell fish, especially oysters are in-season: Months without the letter 'R' means Oysters are out of season (i.e. June, July, August). The six oysters came out on a plate without ice so they warmed up pretty quick which took away from the taste. I usually expect oysters to come out laid upon a pile of ice as I enjoy them chilled. These oysters were cool, not chilled. The Gumbo. It LOOKED good, but the flavor, or the lack thereof, proved otherwise. It had the consistency you would expect in a Gumbo but the flavoring was off, it really lacked the southern spices. I ended up having to Tabasco all my food (even the oysters), to enjoy the meal. The view is great. I went in a group of 12 so we were sat outside which gave us a nice view of the open waters. Showing up just before sunset will probably provide an excellent view. Again, this review is based on two items and my personal review of the food. It may be worth trying some of the items on the menu.

There is nothing extremely special about it. We had grilled shrimp, redfish, and kid's fish fingers. The redfish was the best tasting. The kid's meal was a reasonable value.

Started out with the Fried Green Tomatoes with Crabmeat topping, and you should too. Yum! Then ordered the crab and shrimp plate. It was so much food! And so much fun cracking and shoving heaps of old bay steamed seafood in my mouth. I really liked that the sides that came with it included cole slaw and hush puppies and potatoes. Usually its corn and potatoes. This was actually a big factor in deciding to go here for dinner...idk why, it just was. The hush puppies were awesome and the slaw was nicely done. The shrimp was excellent. The crab, I hate to say it but it seemed to be a bit over steamed making it pretty difficult to crack the shells. It was also pretty heavily seasoned. But still really good. I enjoyed it more than the more expensive seafood restaurant we had tried a couple days before.

This is literally one of my most favorite restaurants along the coast. I first visited here about two years ago and I go out of my way to return! The smoked tuna dip heaven!! The staff is friendly and efficient, even when busy. The patio offers a beautiful view of the Sound and has a dock where you can feed the fish.

We visited here last night and decided to take some friends with us since we loved everything about this restaurant the 2 times prior to this visit. Unfortunately I wish we had skipped the crab shack this time. While the ambiance, service, and live music were all great the food was, as a fellow party member described it, "subpar". The catch of the day tasted like it had been frozen, and the crab cakes didn't taste quite right. Although we didn't enjoy our main course the gumbo still delivered as always. We will most likely try the crab shack again soon.

I've seen this place many times going to and from work but never thought to stop in. I'm glad I did this past weekend (twice). Their red snapper plate is wonderful. I love the atmosphere. It's just a little place on the water. My husband, son and I were able to watch the sun go down over the water as we finished our dinner!

This Place deserves more than 5 stars!! It's a true hidden gem! The outside is nothing to look it don't let it fool you. The food is outstanding. Me and my husband had the fried shrimp dinner which came with hush puppies, cole slaw and 1 side item ( I picked French fries) the shrimp were fried perfect!! Coleslaw was yummy. We also had the fried green tomatoes which were fantastic!! I have never had any so great. You must order sweet tea because it was some of the best I've had. For dessert the key lime pie was great. It's not a tart key lime like I am use too it's mostly sweet but still very good. You must check with place out and make sure you ask for Dee! He is awesome!!!!

Traveled 5 hours this past weekend to Fort Walton for a mini vacation with the husband. Arrived Saturday afternoon around 4. Traffic was already a beast so we didn't want to wait in traffic going to Destin. Stopped by The Crab Shack for convenience and honestly, I like the hole in the wall type places. No huge flashing billboard, the parking lot wasn't huge and the inside matched. Simple. We were immediately sat by a friendly hostess and greeted shortly after by our server, Mimi. She told us the specials, always had a smile and a sense of humor on top of that. My husband got the eggplant app special (PHENOMENAL) and I ordered a dozen oysters (also phenomenal). Our entrees came out with no wait and both were just as amazing as the apps. Mahi topped with candied pecans and a spinach sauce over mashed potatoes (was on special) and the snow crab platter. We were very impressed by not only the service, but the food as well. We sat on the patio and finished up our beverages while soaking up the view. I would highly recommend this to anyone! We ate at AJ'S the next night. The exact same snow crab platter was more expensive and not near the quality of The Crab Shack. Props to everyone at The Crab Shack! Especially Mimi, I can only imagine the stress of dealing with out-of-town folks all the time.

The location on the beach is awesome! If the weather is nice and you have kids there is a huge playground for them while you are waiting for food or a table. The food and service was decent, nothing really unique but not bad.

Menu: House salad topped with smoked tuna dip. It was so so. I expected slices or wedged if tomatoes on a salad not just a few bits of diced tomato. Also I expected bell peppers, green & black olives, and much more. I was simply let down again. But I'm figuring out this is what to expect in this tourist trap area. Service: Excellent, I tipped our attentive waiter a 20%+ Bottom line: I will not go back. This is a place for tourist, not locals.

What a beautiful surprise! Yelp reviews helped me put this restaurant on the list, then groupon sealed the deal. Was expecting decent food. I was shocked. Fabulous!!! I expected the same ole same ole. What surprised me was the fresh take on on standbys. Oysters Rockefeller - oyster with creamy spinach and a sprinkle of parm, right? Nope! Lightly baked with fresh spinach and a slight rotel tomato flavor in a delicate cream sauce. Amazing! It'll make you scrape that oyster shell clean!! Crawfish pasta with cream sauce - not swimming in a hot cream sauce, gently tossed in a delicate cream sauce, sautéed crawfish laid on top with shaves of parm. Yum!!! Definitely a keeper

Sit outside for a waterfront view and good food. Definitely won't go wrong here if you are in town and wanting good steamed seafood. I'm glad we didn't go listen to the reviews. We wanted steam crab and clams. And we weren't disappointed. A little pricier then we wanted though. Previously went to Rick's Crab Trap but didn't like how everything was really salty and steamed with the same seasoning. We wanted the natural sweetness of the crabs and this place provided it. We ordered the snow crab and shrimp platter ($32) and inquired about clams which he offered as an addition for $6 for a dozen little ones (sweet and worth it). They actually deveined the shrimps, big plus in my book. Ordered the fried green tomatoes topped with crab meat and aioli sauce. Also tried the super chunky "gumbolaya". Both are worthwhile appetizers.

Was in town and wanted a seafood place. Reading the reviews I almost skipped this place. So glad we didn't! We went early on Sat (2/14) and it was not busy at all. We got to pick out table (it was cold so we sat inside). Server was prompt and friendly. We ordered Oyster Rockefeller, Snow Crab, Crab Combo and Crawfish and Crab pasta. Rockefeller was different than anywhere we have ever had them but they were fresh and HUGE! Both crab dinners were well over a pound (in my opinion). Nice color, meat pulled easily and did not taste frozen or old! They do put old bay on it but I love old bay so I had no problems. The only negative is hush puppies come on the plate and got soggy. The crispy bite I did have was awesome! Crawfish and Crab pasta was outstanding! Food delivered fast, beers were cold, family had a great time and out of there before Valentines dinner rush started and they gave out roses to all the women for Valentines day which was a nice touch! We will be back next time in town!!! FYI: there seems to be limited parking and only two handicap spots near ramp. If we had not gone at 4 I could see this being a problem for us. We were able to sit in the outside enclosed sitting room and son's wheelchair was fine. If it had been busy we would have had problems. Keep this in mind if you have special needs folks.

In my 20 years of living in the 850 I've only been here twice. This review will be based of the most recent experience back in the middle of May. As other reviewers have mentioned, this restaurant is fairly expensive for the amount of food you receive. The two times I've went I've not eaten inside the building, so I can't comment on the interior of the building. The outside dining area is nice. The tables are very weathered wooden benches. One part of the dining area is under a canopy while the other is not (but I think a tarp can be set up.) There is a pier attached to the dining area that you can walk down, but you can certainly enjoy the view from your table. My service was somewhat slow as well, but not to the extent as others have had. We received our menus and put our drink orders in as soon as we were seated. The drinks and the food came out in a decent amount of time. We ordered the snow crab legs and peel-n-eat shrimp meal. Neither of us eat a whole lot, so splitting the plate between us gave us enough to make us full. I thought everything tasted great. For the entree that comes with the meal, I picked the new potatoes and they tasted delicious. Nothing tasted cold or undercooked. When it came time for our check we never got one while we waited, so we just went to the cashier and paid there. They had no problem with us doing that. I guess based on all the bad reviews the service and food here is hit or miss. If you're feeling lucky then go here if you want steamed seafood and the nice view of the water. If not, look at the restaurants in Destin's or Pensacola's direction. Don't wait for your check, just pay it inside.

On a whim we stopped in for a late lunch and found a great place. The seating outside on the deck overlooking the water was plain but very, very nice. My wife had the grilled shrimp, potatoes and spinach; I had the tuna sandwich with a side of fries. Both meals were great and came at a fair price. The service was friendly and prompt. Great job Jennifer, we'll be back.

Great variety of seafood: crab legs, clams, mussels, oysters, crab cakes. Nice drink specials. Very local atmosphere if your looking to avoid the big commercialized restaurants. If you like steamed seafood buckets you wont be disappointed.

Good Food, had the crab and calamari. The service on the other hand was horrible!!!!!!!!! It was not that busy and there were plenty of staff to go around but they could not seem to get it together. Everyone was waiting for food, drinks, checks. Think it was an hour and a half until; my table received our food. Would not go back.

Yes, it's a shack. Literally. So I will give them one star for being honest. The outdoor seating is quite pleasant, though more rustic than I would like for a $70 meal for two people. Our waitress was terrible. She was incredibly awkward and did not know the prices on the drinks; including the draft and bottled beers. We had to wait ten minutes while she went to ask the bartender how much everything was. We also waited just under fifteen minutes for her to come get the check back from us before we decided to take it up to the cashier ourselves. And to put it in perspective: there were about four groups of people dining there at the time. My husband and I both had the snow crab dinners and salad, and we both ordered drinks. Pretty generic salad that came with crackers (just personal taste, but not a fan of crackers... where are the croutons??). The Pina colada was pretty tasty; it wasn't like a "normal" pina colada but it was good. They also have Shock Top on draft, so kudos there. It would have been nice if it were cold though; by the time I got my beer it was already warm. It's a good thing I really, really like Shock Top. The crab was WAY overcooked and shrunken inside the shell. They also use an absolutely absurd amount of seasoning that tastes like Top Ramen seasoning. I like to be able to taste my food... especially seafood. All I could taste was season and lemon. It was honestly very awful. In short, I will never eat here again. I would also suggest that unless you love cheap tasting seafood, you don't eat here either. Not worth the money and not an experience you will want to remember.

We're locals and have had decent meals there before, but not the last two times. They're out of Miller Lite and apparently don't know how to get to the grocery store. Same thing for the KeyLime pie. Waitress was wonderful, but the place was not well stocked or managed.

Have eaten here half a dozen times over the past several years when visiting the Gulf Coast. Very good fish tacos, corn crab chowder, crab cake sandwich, and arguably the best seafood gumbo in the Destin area. Service is always prompt and friendly.

Shack is the perfect name for this place.. Just paid $83 for a meal I had to walk out on. We sat on the outside deck and were bombarded by gnats the entire time. It's very hard to enjoy dinner when insects are crawling on your body and your food. Edit.. We went back and explained our experience, the manager gave us a discount on our next visit.. The food was great, but I'll remember to eat inside next time.

Went there for a business lunch. When we asked about the special, the server made it known that it was expensive ($15.99)....Not that bad of a price. But, instead of describing the menu, he seemed more concerned if we would be able to afford the meal. Started off with Fried Green Tomatoes and Calamari. Fried Green Tomatoes were very good. The Kitchen Manager just added his take on Calamari which is a great concept and tasted very nice (Except was slightly overcooked). A gentleman in our party ordered the Blackened Grouper sandwich. As I feared from other reviews on Yelp, we did not think it was Grouper (Looked like Red Fish). We asked the server if it was actually Grouper, he swore it was. When the Manager came out, she seemed a little put off by our doubt. She offered to not charge us for the Grouper, but we insisted on paying. Other items we ordered were: Blacked Red fish and Dungeness Crabs (Both very good). We've been coming here for years and will continue to do so. Its just disappointing to try to support local businesses, only to be let down.

This place was AWFUL! We went in on a Monday night (not a hoppin busy night to say the least). We seated ourselves as instructed. After waiting nearly 20 min without so much as a nod from the waitress that passed us 4 times... my brother went inside to get someone. A gentleman came out and took our drink order... but didn't bring any menus. So we took some from the table next to us when they were done. After another 15 min... and the guy still hadn't returned... we left. I explained to the manager on our way out WHY we were leaving. He didn't even apologize... simply said... have a good night?! HUH?! Really? Nice customer service! AVOID THIS PLACE! It'll waste all your time and you'll have a horrible experience!

My husband and I came on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There was only 3 tables pretty slow but so was the service. I initially ordered a sweet tea after 20 minutes of waiting for my drink order to be taken. After 15 minutes the waitress brings a diet coke, that's not what I ordered. I ask for my sweet tea. 20 minutes later I get it. I had the creole shrimp over cheese grits for $18.49. It totally wasn't worth it at all. My husband ordered the hamburger. It was rare and bleeding. The burger bum wasn't grilled and was falling apart. The food here is just average with big city prices. Total wrip off if you ask me. Won't come here again service is terrible. Food is average. Better luck tomorrow.

I'll have to say, over the last couple years this place has gone DOWNHILL FAST. Two years ago I would have been happy to give it a high 4 maybe even a five. Now I'm struggling with giving it a two. I think I'm being gracious. So often people use the term "quaint" to describe something that they think should be good but they can't put their finger on it. Dirty tables, poor service, undercooked food and pricing way out of line does NOT make me think quaint. It makes me think they need to close their doors and end the charade. BUT as with far too many locations on the water...stuff shirt tourists from above the Mason-Dixon line are drawn to these holes like flies to sugar water and think this is what "Florida" is about. They are taken in by the waterside dining and honestly, I think you could serve fish food and put a huge price on it and they'd go back to Danville Illinois and claim they had the best food ever. I really wish this place was like it used to be and served GREAT food at a good price....but these days they don't. Smart owners would take notice of their dwindling clientele of "locals" who are here spending money all year round and bring their standards up to something that would impress US! Not that their is anything wrong with the tourist pallet, is just seems most of these people truly find these places amazing because they simply have no real basis of comparison. Last time I ate here my friends and I ALL became violently ill withing hours. Me thinks something microbial was lurking in the shrimp!

I ate at the Shack over a year ago, but I am still talking about it. Fair warning though: my review is based on one dish alone (although I did have soup, and that was tasty as well.) My mom and I were visiting Florida to greet my nephew, who is in the Air Force, back from Iraq. Since we were at the beach, why not have some seafood? We wanted a dive with good food, not a tourist restaurant. This place seemed to fit the bill. It literally is a shack. I had the soft-shell crab sandwich. It was so good that on the day we were leaving, we went back to have it again. On the same trip, we also went to a famous seafood restaurant in Charleston, SC. Despite its reputation, the softshell crab sandwich there wasn't nearly as good as the Shack's.

I wish I had read the remembered which reviews went with which restaurant before I went. It was just bad. Super nice seating on the water at sunset, that is where pleasant bid us good night. Service was fair at best. We ordered the big steampot for two. After waiting about 30 minutes, one of the crab clusters was still frozen. The shrimp were terrible and overcooked, the crawfish had no flavor, the clams had fallen out of the shells to the bottom of the bucket under the gritty oysters and we chewed sand. Only some of the oysters opened. I returned the frozen piece of crab to the waitress who said sorry and replaced it 10 minutes later. When she did she said, "and I brought you some potatoes". The entree was supposed to come with hush pups and a choice of side which she never even offered to begin with. It was too absurd to even complain and I don't think this was an abnormal experience. I can forgive, but I will not go back.
